Intentional or not, hurtful actions can fray personal relationships and tear at community. Garments are intimately connected to us, a second skin. Clothing mediates our physical and emotional experiences, while absorbing our internal reactions and external influences. The cloth in my work comes from thrift stores, evoking their prior owners and the community they lived in. In textile, like the body, we stitch to reconnect what is damaged. Repeated acts of stitching tend wounds. I dissect garments and collage the parts together into a new whole. Then I cut into these collages, making holes. Using historic mending techniques, I weave new cloth into the hole, and suture cuts. These interventions leave scars. Scars are new skin (or cloth), evidence of pain and growth. They acknowledge damage caused, attempts to heal, and the pain and hope that are elemental parts of relationships. “see how we are 1-4” were started in September 2023 while I was in the Studioworks residency at the Tides Institute and Museum of Art in Eastport, Maine. They are composed of suits, shirts, and bits of fabric from local thrift stores and surplus stores. I dissected the suits and shirts along the seams where they were sewn together and collaged the parts together. These new collages were then cut into and the holes mended with Colonial American and European mending techniques. Physical proximity causes sweat and strength, dirt and fear, love and cologne to embed in cloth and flesh indiscriminately. The mark left on our clothes and skin is the reminder of a story both epic and mundane that describes how we became who we are. Some of the marks left on our clothes and skin are subtle while others seem to embellish or contort the area around them. Scars in cloth and skin, distorted or delicate, can reflect the aggression of the initial wound and/or the sensitivity of the person who stitched them. These works begin when I cut a hole into the cloth. The repairs are made using traditional textile darning and mending techniques learned from studying European and American mending samplers. My hand knit acrylic re-creations of these heroes’ costumes combine their heroic, protective, ultra-masculine, yet vulnerable personae with the protective gestures of my mother – hand knit acrylic sweaters meant to keep me safe from New England winters. The costumes are life-size, my size, wearable objects that hang limply on hangers challenging the standard muscular form of the hero and offering the space for someone to imagine themselves wearing the costume, becoming the hero. They become the uniforms I can wear to protect my family from the threats (bullies, murderers, terrorists, pedophiles, and fanatical messianic characters) we are told surround us. The Sweatermen are heroes of my own invention. They push the language of the hero costume by highlighting knitting materials, textures, and traditions in the form of the costume. Some of the color and texture choices, as in Sweaterman 3, are based on the sweaters my mother made, her love of cables, and her color choices. The most recent costumes in this series (Sweaterman 4-9) combine the colors of comic book heroes with detailed knitting patterns. His work uses textiles, performance, print, and photography to reveal the vulnerability inherent in traditional western ideals of masculinity. His work has been included in the prestigious Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art 2019, China; the&nbsp; 2019 Rijswijk Textile Biennial, The Netherlands, as well as in group exhibitions at the Textile Museum of Canada, The Mint Museum, The Textile Museum at George Washington University, and The Museum of Arts and Design. He has had&nbsp; solo exhibitions at The Arizona State University Art Museum; The Cranbrook Art Museum; The Chicago Cultural Center; and Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, MO. Newport was included in the American Craft Council’s College of Fellows in 2024. His work has also been recognized by awards from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, a 2011 Artist Fellowship from the Kresge Foundation, and grants from the Creative Capital Foundation, the Arizona Commission on the Arts, and the Herberger College of Arts at Arizona State University.
